Harry Hoffstadt, CEC, AAC, HOF, Receives Prestigious American
Academy of Chefs Lawrence A. Conti, CEC, AAC, HOF, Chair’s
Achievement Award
St. Augustine, Fla., July 16,
2009—The American Academy of Chefs (AAC), the honor society
of the American Culinary Federation (ACF), honored Harry Hoffstadt,
certified executive chef (CEC), American Academy of Chefs (AAC), hall of
fame (HOF), of Niles, Ill., with the Lawrence A. Conti, CEC, AAC, HOF,
Chair’s Achievement Award. Hoffstadt accepted the award during a
formal ceremony and dinner at the 2009 ACF National Convention held at
the Orlando World Center Marriott, Orlando, Fla., July 10.
This is the first year the Lawrence A. Conti, CEC, AAC, HOF,
Chair’s Achievement Award has been presented. The award is given
to a Fellow of the Academy who is not only dedicated to the American
Academy of Chefs, but also to the culinary profession. This individual
must be an ACF member for a minimum of 35 years and be actively involved
in both AAC and ACF. Hoffstadt has achieved success in both business and
culinary arts and has the respect of AAC fellows at large.
Hoffstadt retired from his executive chef and director of food
services position at A.B. Dick Co., Chicago, in 1992 after 18 years of
service. Hoffstadt’s illustrious culinary career began in
Switzerland, where he graduated from the Hotel Business School Monita in
Lucerne in 1954. He was executive chef for many European properties
before immigrating to the U.S. in 1942 to begin his American career. He
worked as executive chef for several stateside organizations in addition
to his position at A.B. Dick Co.
Hoffstadt has been an active member of ACF Chicago Chefs of Cuisine
Inc., since 1958. He served as president for four terms, was a member of
the board of directors and participated in numerous committees.
Hoffstadt, the recipient of many chapter and national titles, was
awarded lifetime chapter membership in 1982. He has been a member of the
American Academy of Chefs (AAC) since 1977, has served in many official
AAC capacities and was inducted into the AAC Hall of Fame in 2002. In
addition, Hoffstadt has been a member of Les Amis d’Escoffier
Society of Chicago since 1972 and was inducted into the Disciples of
Escoffier in 2003. Additionally, he has been a longtime member of the
International Food Service Executives Association, the Honorable Order
of the Golden Toque and the Catering Executive Club of America.
The Lawrence A. Conti, CEC, AAC, HOF, Chair’s Achievement Award
was established in honor of Larry Conti, past vice chair and chair of
the AAC, who exemplified strong leadership through personal integrity
and his concern for the individual members and their careers.
The AAC, which recognizes those individuals who have made significant
contributions to both the culinary profession and ACF, was established
in 1955 at the ACF national convention in Pittsburgh. Those credited
with its founding include the legendary Pierre Berard, Peter Berrini and
Paul Laesecke, HOF, AAC.
