Corey Siegel, a Student at The Culinary Institute of America, Named 2010 ACF Northeast Region Student Chef of the Year

St. Augustine, Fla., March 16, 2010—Corey Siegel, certified culinarian (CC), of Amherst, N.Y., a student at The Culinary Institute of America (CIA), Hyde Park, N.Y., received the American Culinary Federation, Inc., (ACF) Northeast Region Student Chef of the Year award at the Celebrating Regional Excellence Awards Gala last night at the close of the 2010 ACF Northeast Regional Conference held at Hershey Lodge, Hershey, Pa., March 13–15.

Sponsored by Custom Culinary, Inc., the ACF Northeast Region Student Chef of the Year award recognizes an up-and-coming student who demonstrates a high level of professionalism, culinary skills and a passion for the culinary arts. Siegel competed against two other students before being declared the winner. Students prepared four portions of a protein savory dish or four portions of a pastry dish, depending on their area of studies. A panel of judges chose the winner. As this year’s Northeast Region recipient, Siegel will compete for the national title against the winners from the three other ACF regions at the 2010 ACF National Convention in Anaheim, Calif., Aug. 2–5.

Two years ago at age 17, Siegel earned the certified culinarian designation from ACF, demonstrating his dedication to the culinary profess. Siegel, like his grandfather who studied with Julia Child and James Beard, and his mother who also attended the CIA, found a common passion for food and cooking. In April, after Siegel graduates with an associate degree, he plans to travel to India and Japan to study the countries’ cuisine.

Siegel has been an active member of ACF of Greater Buffalo New York since he attended a vocational high school four years ago. He sees competition as a way to demonstrate the professionalism and passion that he lives for, and to inspire other junior ACF members. His ultimate goal is to be a member of ACF Culinary Team USA, the official representative of the U.S. in national and international competitions.

The 2010 ACF Northeast Regional Conference, hosted by ACF Harrisburg Chapter, brought hundreds of chefs, cooks and foodservice professionals to Hershey. The conference provided attendees with opportunities to advance their professional development and enhance their culinary skills through business seminars, cooking demonstrations featuring the latest trends and techniques, cooking competitions and awards.
