Bernard Urban, CEC, AAC, Receives 2010 ACF
Central Region Rene Roncari Senior Chef Humanitarian Award
St. Augustine, Fla., March 29,
2010—Bernard Urban, certified executive chef, (CEC),
American Academy of Chefs (AAC), of Houston, received the American
Culinary Federation, Inc. (ACF) Central Region Rene Roncari Senior Chef
Humanitarian Award at the 2010 ACF Central Regional Conference held at
the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown, Indianapolis, March 26–28.
Urban is chef-ambassador at Ben E. Keith Co., Conroe, Texas.
The award recognizes an outstanding culinarian who is at least a
25-year ACF and AAC member, an ACF-certified executive chef or higher,
and is at least 62 years old. The award was established in honor of Rene
Roncari, a member of ACF Chicago Chefs of Cuisine Inc. Roncari was also
a member of the AAC, ACF’s honor society, and served as its chair
from 1981 to 1985.
Urban’s career began in the 1950s as a pastry chef in his
native Switzerland and included a tour of duty as a chef in the Swiss
army. He worked in Finland, then Canada, and eventually made the U.S.
his home. He has been an executive chef for several decades in
fine-dining establishments. He has been an ACF member since 1963,
serving as the first Culinary Arts Chairman in 1970. He competed as a
member of ACF Culinary Regional Team USA in 1968, 1972, 1980 and 1984.
He was national Chef of the Year in 1976, and has been continuously
active in ACF at the national level. Urban has been a chef-instructor at
several postsecondary institutions and has served as a culinary judge
for many competitions. He is a member of Texas Chefs Association.
The 2010 ACF Central Regional Conference, hosted by ACF Greater
Indianapolis Chapter, brought hundreds of chefs, cooks and foodservice
professionals to Indianapolis. The conference provided attendees with
opportunities to advance their professional development and enhance
their culinary skills through business seminars, cooking demonstrations
featuring the latest trends and techniques, cooking competitions and
awards.
