Donald McMillan, CEC, AAC, Receives ACF Southeast
Region Hermann G. Rusch Chef’s Achievement Award
St. Augustine, Fla., April 27,
2010—Donald McMillan, certified executive chef (CEC),
American Academy of Chefs (AAC), of Lewisville, N.C., received the
American Culinary Federation, Inc. (ACF) Southeast Region Hermann G.
Rusch Chef’s Achievement Award at the 2010 ACF Southeast Regional
Conference held at the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel, Birmingham, Ala.,
April 24–26. McMillan is a chef-instructor at The Stocked Pot
Cooking School, Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Hermann G. Rusch Chef’s Achievement Award recognizes a chef
who has generously shared his/her knowledge with others throughout the
years, and continues to be a source of information and guidance for
other culinarians. As this year’s Southeast Region recipient,
McMillan is a candidate to receive the national 2010 Hermann G. Rusch
Chef’s Achievement Award that will be presented at the 2010 ACF
National Convention in Anaheim, Calif., Aug. 2–5.
McMillan has 45 years of experience in the culinary industry. He has
worked in foodservice venues from fast food to fine dining. From 1962 to
1964, he cooked for scientists and officers aboard the Anton Bruun
Oceanographic Vessel, which was part of the International Indian Ocean
Expedition. After that, he worked on other vessels until 1967. From 1970
to 1985, McMillan held management positions for ARAMARK at various
locations, including the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y., the
Denver Broncos’ Mile High Stadium in Denver, and Philadelphia
International Airport, Philadelphia. From 1985 to 2008, he worked as
chef/owner of Simple Elegance Restaurants Inc., and operated The Stocked
Pot and Co., a cooking school, for 12 years. He now assists his son with
management of the business [now The Stocked Pot Cooking School] and
continues to teach cooking classes.
Career highlights include being named ACF Triad Chapter NC’s
Chef of the Year in 1988 and 1995; being inducted into the American
Academy of Chefs in 1996; being the official caterer for the South
African pavilion at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta; appearing
on-screen as chef for The Hallmark Channel holiday special,
“Celebrate! Christmas with Maya Angelou,” in 2005; and
assisting Angelou in the food design and preparation for
Hallelujah! The Welcome Table: A Lifetime of Memories with
Recipes (Random House, Inc., 2007). In addition, from 1986 to
2004, McMillan hosted weekly cooking appearances on WXII news in
Winston-Salem, and filmed a 13-episode wild game cooking show for Fox
Sports in 2007.
The 2010 ACF Southeast Regional Conference, hosted by ACF Birmingham
Alabama Chapter, brought hundreds of chefs, cooks and foodservice
professionals to Birmingham. The conference provided attendees with
opportunities to advance their professional development and enhance
their culinary skills through business seminars, cooking demonstrations
featuring the latest trends and techniques, cooking competitions and
awards.
